HUMAN RIGHTS ARE WRONG
Our constitutional rights preserve freedom and democracy. They must not be confused with human rights. Human rights are eating away at our democracy. For sixty years we have been deceived into believing that our freedom depends on bowing before the modern human rights industry.
This new religion’s founded on the lie That freedoms all on human rights rely, A legal pundit in his column writes The Convention “prescribes the basic rights”, Imagining the rights such authors list Before Convention came did not exist. And if it went, we’re told, all men should fear That all our freedoms would soon disappear, Whereas our freedoms would remain the same Established long before Conventions came.
These words are part of Rape of Democracy – an ode on human rights. It is short, pithy and easy to read. Global Speak – the five untruths is a more detailed exploration of the danger we face. It shows how political universalism can be challenged, and how moderate, humane and practical the alternative is.
This is not an academic debate, but an urgent political issue. The policies needed to tackle security from terrorism, to control the kind of country we want, and to restore belief in our domestic democratic institutions are impossible unless we are prepared to confront political universalism and human rights, its stalking horse. Today, the world suffers from too much international governance, not too little.
